Two Art Shows
Scenes of Saugerties group art show by the instructor and students of the Kristy Bishop Studio will be featured in the church lobby on Friday and Saturday Nov. 18 & 19 and the above painting will be on exhibit currently at ASK Arts Society of Kingston, NY through Jan. 2, 2017.
KBS Art Show at Holiday A-Fair
The Saugerties United Methodist Church, 67 Washington Avenue will host a Holiday A-Fair which includes arts and crafts plus artwork from the Kristy Bishop Studio “Scenes of Saugerties” NY on Nov. 18 Fri. 5 – 8 pm and Nov. 19 Sat 10 am – 2 pm. The public is invited and no admission will be charged. Gift ideas galore for the Holidays!
Other artists who will be exhibiting are: Anthony Lewoc (8) Adults: Patrick Buonfiglio, Lucille Otto, Teresa Herzog, Donna Newkirk, Sally Colclough and instructor Kristy Bishop.
ASK – Arts Society of Kingston, New York
This painting is included in an ASK members group show entitled “Off the Square.” Overlook Mountain in Saugerties – Woodstock, NY area is the backdrop for the 1994 Woodstock Festival which was organized by Michael Lang of Woodstock. ASK gallery is located at 98 Broadway in Kingston.
51st Annual Mum Festival Art Show
Seamon Park, 5 Malden Avenue, Saugerties, NY was the venue where our students exhibited their miniature paintings for competition. Art judges were: Christopher Seubert – Executive Director of the Woodstock School of Art and Nancy Campbell – Former ED of WSA.
In the adult category, Lucille Otto won Second Prize with “Lake View” and Donna Newkirk won Third Prize with “White English Terrier.”
Among the younger artists, Rose Dermody (10) won Second Prize with “Swimming” and Anthony Lewoc (8) won Third Prize with “Leafy Day.” Estelle Kamrass won “Great Artist” with “House on the Mountain” which was the Best of her submissions in this show.
Other participating artists from KBS were: Patrick Buonfiglio and Teresa Herzog, Cassidi Vedder (11) and Autumn Stever (16).
Kristy Bishop Studio – Paintings by Students
The public is welcome to attend the 51st Annual Mum Festival Art Show at Seamon Park, 5 Malden Avenue Route 9W, Saugerties, NY on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016 Noon – 5 pm. There is no rain date for this show. Pictured here: Kristy Bishop Studio presentation of miniature paintings by students ages 8 – octogenarian (89). There will be many other artists displaying their paintings and photographs at the show which will be judged by professional artists. Many current and former students of KBS and some members of the Ulster County Art Association, along with other individual artists as well. A display of gorgeous chrysanthemums will envelope the entire park -a great sight to see!

Why Should We Make Visual Art?
As president of the Ulster County Art Association (2016) based in Saugerties, NY and owner of Kristy Bishop Studio (since 1975), I have thought about this question a lot. At age 4 or 5, I began creating artwork and haven’t stopped since. I NEED to do it!
Neuroscientists say that we are hard-wired to process art. Oshin Vartanian says, “Areas of the brain involved in processing emotion and those that activate our pleasure and reward systems are also being engaged.”
Producing visual art improves psychological resilience, produces increased brain activity and relieves stress. Art is used to record history and inspire everyone. I believe that it is a gift from God.
On this journey of self-discovery through the use of paint, I have learned the importance of having a relationship with God. As a result, I have a sense of self-worth. My confidence improves and I don’t need to be searching for validation from others. If my painting is not accepted in a juried art show, I do not take it personally. It is a step in the process of learning more everyday.
Authentic people have a gravitational pull because they can be trusted. They tell who they are and what they feel so that there are no agendas, hidden or otherwise. The artists that I know very well are positive and passionate about life. They exhibit integrity and walk their talk which makes me want to be around them. Respect for others and themselves is shown by living healthy lifestyles. They share what they know about art without a sense of competition. All of this is a recognition of our co-creation with a Higher Power while we are here on this earth. Let’s make more visual art as a result of this!
